Where will Zel go?

Denzel remembers learning about the Boston Tea Party in school, and knows about the playwright William Shakespeare.  In England, this young man will have the rare opportunity to experience some royal history, see Buckingham Palace, and even meet a member of Parliament.

France

In school, Denzel learned that Gustave Eiffel, the man who engineered the Eiffel tower, was also involved in the design of our own Statue of Liberty. In France, he will be able to see the Eiffel Tower and travel to the top.  He is excited about visiting the famous Louvre museum, where he’ll see famous works of art, such as those of Battista Franco. Denzel has something in common with Franco: a love of sketching images of people.  Imagine being a 14 year old Cleveland boy and having the chance to view famous art in Paris, France!

Belgium

Denzel is not familiar with Beligum at all, so this portion of his trip will be a real eye-opener. He will learn about World War I during a visit to the American cemetery and memorial at Flanders Field. He may even ride in a horse drawn carriage through Bruges. Denzel is on strict orders to bring back some Belgian chocolate.

Denzel is interested in learning about the culture of the Netherlands. He is fascinated with the idea of people wearing wooden shoes, and interested in how they use windmills for industrial purposes.  He will get to visit the Hague, where the United Nations International Court of Justice is located.

Overseas travel has a long lasting, positive effect on youths. Seeing the way people live in other countries will give Denzel a new perspective on the way he and his peers live in Cleveland, Ohio. Experiencing cultures other than his own will help him to appreciate the way that culture influences people’s values, beliefs and their thoughts about the world. He will gain a type of global perspective that he could not achieve otherwise - an education that will help him grow as a person and instill confidence.  This experience will also  benefit him when he’s ready for college and the job market. Below are the places Denzel has the opportunity to visit this summer.
